Borrowed and Blue Sweethearts

Boy oh Boy am I glad you've found your way to this screen! I am so thrilled to share a super fun Q&A with Charleston's new Borrowed and Blue co-founders, Christin and Adam Healey. A newly married couple themselves, this adorable duo created Charleston's newest and most resourceful wedding tool. Planning their own wedding inspired these sweeties to help those seeking guidance while searching for great wedding vendors in the area. My favorite part; Borrowed and Blue features the most amazingly inspirational Real Weddings. We hope Christin and Adam have felt a warm Charleston welcome! T: A husband and wife duo! How fun! What is the best thing about working with your groom? Does a male perspective come in handy in a somewhat feminine wedding industry?

C: I would say, having a vision, collaborating on new ideas, and seeing them come to life.  We don't always agree on everything, but we always come to a decision that we are both happy with. The end result, with the help of our amazingly talented team, is always exceptional.  A male perspective totally comes in handy.  When we were designing the site, Adam and our designer John, kept me from getting a little too frilly :-)  The end result was a modern site, with feminine touches.  

T: I see that your personal wedding planning hurdles inspired Borrowed and Blue. What was the most difficult part of the planning process for you as a couple?

C: Well, it was trying to find vendors and venues in our town that we felt comfortable working with.  I spent hours typing vendors into Google, and had no luck with local directories.  I loved looking at Real Weddings on other blogs, but was never able to use any of the vendors as they were usually in different markets. Lastly, when I used larger, national sites, the search for a "local" vendors would give me results for vendors hours away from us.  These frustrations led to Adam and I coming up with a solution; fusing the inspiration phase with the planning, and having all of the top quality local vendors and venues in one place.  

T: Was there a specific piece or detail that sparked that initial inspiration for your wedding vision?

C: We really just chose to work with the natural beauty of the area we live in. The Blue Ridge Mountains, rolling hills, and beautiful farms here are amazing.  We choose our venue, Castle Hill Cider, first, and used that as our canvas to work from.  We love the outdoors, and really kept that in mind while planning.  I did not have any specific colors, I asked our florist to have a mix of seasonal wildflowers, paired with some more romantic white flowers-the end result was perfect for us.  We also did a ton of DIY projects, and it really gave that personal touch that really carried over to our guests.  

T: (Based out of Charlottesville, VA) Why Charleston? What turned you on to the city and made it right for Borrowed and Blue?

C: First of all, Charleston is our kind of city, amazing restaurants, wonderful people, and the beach to top it off.  Charleston is also a huge destination wedding market, and we really feel like we can help brides planning their Charleston wedding!  We choose wedding markets that have natural beauty, Borrowed & Blue is not going after the mass market of weddings, but rather gorgeous destinations that brides and grooms are selecting for their weddings. 

T: What are a few of your favorite details that set apart a Charleston wedding from others? Any Charleson trends that you have enjoyed?

C: Hands down the Spanish Moss and Live Oaks.  You can look at one of our weddings and know right away that it is in Charleston.  Of course, I love the beach as well, but the beautiful light that you get from that moss is just so very special.  As far as trends, I'm not sure if it's a trend so much as tradition, but I love how some of the brides tie in the Palmetto Roses into their weddings.  It has such a great story behind it, and is something that is so unique to the area.  Also Charleston brides are always just so incredibly glamorous and beautiful.  As a Southern girl myself, I have a soft spot for these ladies :-)

T: As much as we all love the bells and whistles, what advice do you give to brides and grooms in order to keep their relationship healthy and put their engagement first?

C: Love this question!  When we were really thinking through this business, that was our main goal.  The engagement period is so short, and it goes so fast!  I would say, don't forget that, and make the time every day to take a deep breath and remind yourself that although your wedding will be gorgeous, your fiance is more important.  My husband and I took a trip a few weeks before our wedding to St. Lucia, that was such a great idea!  There was one project that I didn't finish, but it never has crossed my mind.  What I do remember are those 5 blissful days right before the wedding, where everything was calm.  If that's not an option, just try to get away for a weekend and leave all wedding talk at home.  That DIY project or centerpiece choice is great, but you can never get that time back of being engaged, and wow is that a great time.
